🌤 Climate

JFMAMJJASOND
Day °CSea °CRain
Best: Dec – Mar · Wet: Sep – Oct
Langkawi runs opposite to Malaysia's east coast: the northeast monsoon (Dec-Feb) is the dry season here and the southwest monsoon (Jun-Oct) is the wet one. Heat is never the question - highs sit between 30.7 and 33.3C and the sea never drops below about 28.5C - but rain is, and the gap is enormous: 24mm in January against 372mm in October.

✈️ Getting there

AirAsiaBatik AirMalaysia Airlines
Kuala Lumpur€20–€60
Penang€20–€50
Singapore€50–€130
Langkawi International (LGK) at Padang Matsirat, 8km from Pantai Cenang and 20km from Kuah, mostly domestic. There is no airport bus and no public transport anywhere on the island: buy a fixed-price coupon at the arrivals desk or take a Grab. The Penang ferry has been cancelled.

🏧 ATMs & money

Fees: Kind by comparison: most local banks add no surcharge, or a small RM 10–12 at worst — only your home bank's fees apply.
Limits: Typically RM 1,500–3,000 per pull, some machines RM 5,000.
Best machines: MaybankCIMBPublic Bank
Licensed money changers (malls in KL, Lebuh Chulia in George Town) give excellent cash rates for major currencies — fine for topping up, no need to carry big sums.

🩺 Health & safety

Vaccines: Routine plus Hepatitis A; Typhoid if you'll eat adventurously (you should).
Health: Dengue is present — repellent at dusk. Most locals drink filtered water; do the same. Private healthcare (KL, Penang) is excellent and inexpensive; pharmacies dispense competently everywhere.
Tap water: ⚠️ Officially treated but most locals boil or filter it — stick to bottled or filtered to be safe.
Safety: One of Southeast Asia's calmest countries. The single habit to build: carry bags on the building side of the pavement — motorbike snatch theft is the local specialty, easily beaten. East-coast islands close in the Nov–Feb monsoon; the west coast (Penang!) shines year-round as your alternative.
Emergency: 999 all emergencies

🌱 Vegan, veggie & gluten-free

Plant-based: Indian-Malaysian canteens are a vegetarian goldmine — banana-leaf thali, chapati, dhal for $2. 'Sayur saja' = vegetables only.
Gluten-free: Rice and rice-noodle dishes dominate; watch soy and kicap in stir-fries, and roti/mee are wheat.
Look for 'vegetarian' mamak counters; Buddhist 'zhai' shops in George Town are fully plant-based.

🛂 Visa & entry

For most short tourist trips, citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen, Canada, Australia and New Zealand either enter visa-free or get a simple online authorisation (an eVisa or eTA) before flying. Typical visa-free stays run 30–90 days. Some countries want a visa arranged in advance, and a growing number ask you to fill an online arrival or eVisa form even when 'visa-free' — so always check the official portal for your exact nationality before you book.
Rules change — always verify with an official source for your nationality before you book.

💬 Traveller tips & reports

Duty-free is only worth it on the right things — A half-litre of local beer is 4 RM here against a Malaysian average of 11.96, and chocolate runs 30-40% under Kuala Lumpur prices. Buy in Kuah rather than at the airport, and pay cash for another 10-12% off. Ordinary groceries are not cheaper. Taking drink to the mainland needs 48 hours on the island, one litre.

Sort out wheels on the first morning — There is no bus, no train, no public transport at all, and the island is 25km across. A small automatic is 70-110 RM a day, less than two taxi rides; a scooter is 25-40. Film the whole vehicle with the shop owner beside it before you ride off — the rental damage claim is Langkawi's signature argument.
